A woman is dead after two cars collided head-on at Hillsborough.
Initial investigations suggest the 80-year-old from West Wallsend turned into the wrong side of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Windale.
With the four-lane highway divided by a wire barrier, the male driver in the other car was unable to avoid a collision.
He and his passenger escaped with minor injuries. The elderly woman died at the scene.
