A critical incident investigation team are at a property near Tenterfield, where a man was shot dead by police last night.

At about 8:10 officers were called to a rural property near the NSW/Queensland border after residents reported a man had threatened them with a knife.

Police say the man was armed with a knife and a crossbow and was tasered before they shot him dead at a commune in northern NSW.

Officers say they were also confronted by the man and fired one shot.

About 12 people were at the property at the time and are being interviewed by police.

He is the second to be killed by police in the last month.

Police came under criticism in March for the death of Darren Neill, 34, at the Westfield Shopping Centre at Parramatta.
