John Hunter Hospital’s Emergency Department experienced its busiest day ever on New Year’s Day.
Staff treated almost 250 people, that’s 10 per cent more than last year.
While the number of people admitted was up 15 per cent.
Assaults and alcohol-related injuries made up the majority of cases.
But hospital bosses say the introduction of alcohol-free zones at some public events has had a positive impact.
