ASBESTOS EXPOSURE FEARS FOR 200 WORKERS, AT NCIG COAL LOADER

There are fears up to 200 people working on the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group’s coal loader expansion have been exposed to asbestos.
Tests at the Kooragang Island site today confirmed the potentially deadly material was present in a batch of recycled aggregate concrete.

Work has now stopped in the area, which has been deemed unsafe by contractors Downer and John Holland.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says the contaminated building material has been at the site for three months.

Employees will return to the site tomorrow for a meeting.
