Newcastle’s Howzat fitness centre will remain closed over the weekend, despite favourable test results from an investigation into asbestos.
Newcastle Council shut down the Cooks Hill centre yesterday afternoon, after complaints from members that asbestos was falling from the ceiling.
Preliminary tests of samples of the material have found results below the detection limit, but Howzat management will keep the centre closed until the results of further tests become available.
The final results will determine if any work needs to be carried out, before the building is considered safe.
