TURTLE TRACKER PAYS OFF AT PORT STEPHENS

A satellite tracking unit fitted to turtles at Port Stephens is giving researchers new insight on the area’s rich marine life.
They’ve found one turtle, nicknamed Max, travelled hundreds of kilometres from home over the Christmas break.
Meanwhile back at one large Coal Fired Power Station in Lake Macquarie which reportedly utilises up to 3x the volume of Lake Macquarie annually Turtles continue to be impacted on by the man made cooling canal. The station is reportedly licenced to undertake research & has capacity & permission to tag & release “distressed” turtles. (how power station employees define distress is beyond me) However when my son undertook a school project a decade ago not one Sea Turtle ( A Threatened & Endangered Species) was recorded for Lake Mac. Since lobbying commenced I believe just the inlet Turtle Tally has now near reached 100? Both Alive & Dead. I am unsure why Eraring Energy does not tally the Hot water Outlet Turtles present? I am also flabbergasted that these ancient mariners (with only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings making maturity) are allowed to mix with such recognised Key Threatening Processes like man made Marine Debris. The Cooling Canals are extremely popular fishing haunts, with disgarded lines, hooks, bait bags & more, all in the toxic turtle soup mix. BTW whatever happened to the large female green turtle known as LILLY from the FREE LILLY campaign? What a shame a tracking device wasnt attached to this large specimen, after she was netted in the inlet, especially since there was so much time ( near a year?) that she was known to be within the inlet canal system.
