DURESS ALARMS TRIALED IN HUNTER

It’s hoped victims of domestic violence in the Hunter will benefit from a new initiative announced by the state government.

50 duress alarms, similar to this one, will be trialled at cities across New South Wales, including Newcastle.

When women activate the GPS device, it immediately sends a signal to police, who can then pinpoint their location.

Pam Morris from Jenny’s Place says “a lot of them are afraid to even leave the refuge, so I think if they have the alarms, it will enable them to go for a walk, go to the local shopping centre and feel safe.”

Ms Morris says the critical shortage of women’s refuges in the Hunter, also needs to be addressed.
