The police officer shot dead after a routine vehicle stop in Tamworth this morning was a father of six children.

40-year-old Senior Constable David Rixon was shot after he pulled a vehicle over in West Tamworth about 8am.

Senior Constable Rixon joined the force in 1990 and is survived by his wife Fiona and their six children.

New South Wales Commissioner Andrew Scipione says Mr Rixon’s death is a tragic day for all police officers across the state.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Senior Constable Rixon’s
family and colleagues,” Mr Scipione said in a statement.

Another man was injured in a shootout at the scene and was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital.
