FORUM IN FOR COFFS OVER MINING CONCERNS

Community action groups across the mid-north coast are uniting to formulate the best plan of attack against mining exploration.

It’s hoped a regional conference in Coffs Harbour will strengthen the campaigns of each organisation.

  1. The mining and burning of fossil fuels is the greatest threat to the Planet. The International Energy Agency (Outlook 2012) warns that current trends show we are on track for 6 degree warming by the end of this century. That is rated “catastrophic” climate change.

    However, despite being made fully aware of the consequences, our Governments are planning to double coal exports and boast that we will soon be the world’s second largest gas exporter (Energy White Paper, January, 2012).

    I can only describe the current mining boom, particularly in relation to coal and coal seam gas, as madness.

  2. Well said John Edwards. The impact of mining our rural and residential areas, our food bowls and our beautiful landscapes where we live and play and raise our families, while depleting and contaminating our air and water with some of the most toxic gases and chemicals known on the planet, is an outright disgrace. These are no longer concerns for Australian communities, they are very real threats with very real consequences.
