WEATHER UPDATE: COLDEST WINTER WEEKEND SO FAR
The cold air is creeping in across the Hunter and other parts of the broadcast area.
We are in for an incredibly cold weekend, the coldest of the year so far.
It will be brutally cold along the ranges, we are going to see extensive frosts and tonight (Friday 22 June) we will probably see snow fall also across areas such as the Barringtons and possibly right across the Northern Tablelands throughout Guyra and Armidale.
High level cloud has come through this afternoon and there is a cold air mass in behind it, surging across the south east corner of the country. So that cold air will continually be pumped across the broadcast area thanks to a succession of powerful cold fronts that are going to bombard the south east. It’s going to pump all of that cold air northward and that high will come across and as that does the winds at night will settle and we’ll see some severe frosts.
It is a dry air mass and there will be cold south westerly winds. The winds will settle down quickly over the weekend and then start up again on Sunday.
Temperatures will be in the mid teens for the Hunter and the ranges will be lucky to get out of the single digits.
Boating will be good, just very cold. Swell is sitting at a metre with seas up to 3 metres.
Good luck if you are taking the kids out for sport it will be cold on the sidelines. So stay warm and we’ll check in again next week.
SNOW REPORT
Luke Kneller has the latest from Perisher.
Well it was a windy day here in Perisher. With these strong winds though did come scattered snow and rain showers throughout.
15 lifts were set to spin across parts of 3 resort areas with Blue Cow and Smiggins now open. Some lifts did go on wind hold though throughout the day. Two terrain parks were in operation with the slopestyle on front valley and the Yabbie Park for beginners. The more advanced found an array of rails and boxes as well as a 30ft jump, while the beginners made the most of the smaller features in the Yabbie Park.
16 runs were groomed and ready to go here in Perisher with Goats Gulley the pick for the more advanced while beginners made great use of the magic carpets. The cover remained firm-packed for most of the day, with wind-blown stashes.
Now the big cold-front we have all been eagerly awaiting is set to hit tonight into tomorrow bringing with it upwards of 25cms of snow. So this weekend is shaping up to be a good one!
