OLYMPIANS TOUCH DOWN ON HOME SOIL

Australia’s olympic athletes returned home this morning to a huge crowd of family, friends and media.

Lake Macquarie sailor Iain Jensen arrived wearing his gold medal, won in the 49er class with Nathan Outteridge.

He said he was happy to be home.

“It’s great to be back, I only had a week in Australia since the middle of April so it’s going to be good to have some time with my mates and family,” said Jensen.

“It’s been a great experience but it’s very draining.”

It’ll be a short trip home for Nathan Outteridge, he flies out to San Francisco for the America’s Cup after only one day at home.

Other Hunter medal winners including swimmer Angie Bainbridge and Hockey player Simon Orchard were also keen to show off their medals.

Australia won 35 medals at the London Games, seven gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze, leaving it 10th overall on the medal tally.

NBN’s Sports Reporter Mitch Hughes was there and will bring you the full report in NBN News tonight at six.
