Lake Cathie has been opened to the sea, after the water level reached more than 1.6-metres.
Flooding of the foreshore prompted Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to artificially open up the lake.
Council workers moved in this morning, to start the task of digging a channel through the built-up sand.
The initiative will help to improve the lake’s water quality, and reduce silt.
