RESPITE CENTRE GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT

Tweed Shire Council has given the green light, to a controversial homeless respite centre at Tweed Heads.

Councillors approved the development on Boyd Street six to one last night, despite strong opposition from elderly locals.

Nearby residents claim the facility, which will be run by St Vincent De Paul, will create safety and noise issues.

But Mayor Barry Longland says the centre is needed at Tweed Heads due to the area’s high homelessness rate.

Meanwhile an expansion of Kingscliff’s Nobel Park Retirement Village was rejected, due to concerns about over-development and loss of amenity.
