HENS TO BE CULLED AFTER STRAIN OF BIRD FLU IDENTIFIED

50,000 hens will be culled after an unidentified strain of bird flu was detected at a layer hen facility in the lower Hunter Valley.
The Department of Primary Industries put the farm near Maitland under quarantine yesterday.
It has since been confirmed it is not the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain.
Other birds and livestock in the area would be monitored to ensure there has been no spread of the virus.
