Three men armed with machetes threatened and abused staff and patrons at the Mary Ellen in Newcastle last night.
The bar was still open when the men came through the Railway Street door at around 12:30, with bandanas covering their faces.
When one patron refused to lie on the floor one of the robbers knocked him to the ground.
Patrons then threw schooner glasses at the robbers.
The manager was then taken to the office and an amount of cash was stolen.
The men ran onto Railway Street but witnesses lost sight of them.
