THORNTON MAN KILLED AT TARGA TASMANIA RALLY

A Thornton man has been identified as the victim of a car accident during a Targa motor rally in Tasmania yesterday.

71-year-old John Mansell was killed when his Porsche hit a tree and burst into flames during the first competitive stage of the five-day Targa Tasmania event.

His co-pilot Tristan Catford suffered a serious neck injury.

Acting Inspector Chris Parr said a Tasmania Police accident investigation squad was examining the scene at Exton in Tasmania’s northwest to prepare a report for the coroner.

“I certainly wouldn’t have any idea of the speed….there certainly seems to be a significant impact though.” Parr said.

It is the second death to occur in the Tasmanian leg of the series which began in 1992.

Ian Johnston died during the event in 1996.
