Chemical giant Orica says improved safety at its troubled plant at Kooragang Island in Newcastle is the main reason behind a $267-million half-year profit.
The six per cent increase comes after Orica lost $90-million last financial year, amid several stoppages at the plant related to hexavalent chromium and ammonia leaks.
The incidents led to a parliamentary inquiry and the installation of air monitoring devices.
