LAST MINUTE TALKS TO AVOID NEWCASTLE COAL STRIKE

Port Waratah Coal Services workers are preparing to meet with management in an effort to avoid a strike planned for Wednesday.

The four hour stoppage will go ahead on Wednesday unless talks resolve issues over safety and what the union has called an anti-union culture.

The workers claim PWCS is seeking to undermine their health and safety, tear up long standing contracts and change the scope of matters that can be arbitrated.

“It’s the biggest coal terminal in the world and we don’t take (stoppages) lightly,”said AMWU organiser Daniel Wallace

“Workers would be happy to keep their current contract terms but didn’t want to go backwards” Mr Wallace said.

“They’re as flexible as any workforce. It’s been 15 to 20 years since there’s been any industrial action on the site.”

Talks over the issues have been going on for eight months.
