WATER TRIGGER LEGISLATION PASSES THROUGH SENATE

A new measure to protect water resources from coal and coal seam gas mining, was passed in the Senate today.

The changes mean mining activity can no longer be given the green light unless independent scientific advice finds that it won’t damage water resources.

“This isn’t an issue against mining or coal seam gas, it’s an issue that stands very clearly for some form of objective, scientific process in relation to water that the community can have some trust in.”

The water trigger legislation marks the end of seven years of lobbying by Federal MP Tony Windsor alongside local landholders.
