CONTROVERSIAL MAULES CREEK PROJECT READY TO BEGIN

Construction on Whitehaven Coal’s $767-million Maules Creek mine north of Boggabri will begin next week.
The company today announced it had received all necessary approvals to commence work on the project.
The proposal has been shrouded in controversy, with protestors voicing concerns over its environmental impact on the Leard State Forest.
The mine has approval to extract 13-million tonnes of coal each year.
Whitehaven says it expects to employ 340 full-time equivalent workers and contractors during the construction phase, and about 470 during its ongoing operation.
