FIRE FIGHTERS GAIN UPPER HAND

Fire fighters have managed to gain the upper hand on two bushfires burning on the mid north coast.
The Rural Fire Service has spent the day strengthening containment lines at a fire near Taree.
The blaze broke out on Thursday afternoon at Purfleet and jumped the Pacific Highway, threatening homes along Old Bar Road.
Meanwhile further south, a bushfire at Shallow Bay in the Great Lakes has also been brought under control.
Changing conditions saw the fire flare-up yesterday afternoon, with water-bombers called in to protect around 40 properties.
