SHIPPING BERTH PLAN RAISES CONCERN

Environmental concerns have been raised about Newcastle Port Corporation’s plans to dredge the harbour for 12 new shipping berths.
Nearly two million cubic metres of sediment will be removed from the Hunter River, which the Port Corp says will have little impact on the estuary.
But the Hunter Bird Observers Club fears it will cause the water level to rise, in an area that’s vital for shorebirds.
The Port Corp says it’s received 10 submissions regarding its environmental impact statement.
