ORICA PLANS UP FOR APPROVAL

The Hunter Valley Research Foundation is ringing Newcastle residents on behalf of chemical giant Orica, to gauge perceptions of its troubled Kooragang Island plant.

It comes as Orica seeks approval from the state government to produce an extra 70,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate there.

The plan includes the construction of three ammonia flaring stacks, and a 10,000 tonne nitric acid storage tank.

The facility has been under scrutiny from the government and the community after a series of chemical leaks, which resulted in its tempoary closure.
