Police say the mother of a young boy who suffered internal injuries after their car slammed into a power pole at Gateshead was allegedly three times over the legal limit.
The crash happened last night, at the time the five-year-old was unrestrained in the front passenger seat.
The boy was taken to John Hunter Hospital with internal and facial injuries.
His 30-year-old mother allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.160 and was charged with drink driving.
