WOMAN TIES HERSELF TO TREE IN LEARD STATE FOREST
A 24-year-old woman has today tied herself to a tree in a bid to halt clearing of the Leard State Forest.
Whitehaven Coal began clearing 1600 hectares three days ago as part of the development of an open cut mine at Maules Creek.
The company has faced resistance from the Leard Forest Alliance and Greenpeace, who claim there shouldn’t be clearing at this time of year.
However the mining giant says its got the necessary government approval, and that “these sorts of spot protests are a nuisance – mostly for police – but their overall impact is virtually nil.”
