SCHOOL STUDENTS COMMEMORATE CENTAUR SINKING

The ocean off Point Danger was the backdrop for a touching memorial, involving Centaur Primary students.

They gathered to commemorate the sinking- 71 years ago- of their School’s namesake.

The A-H-S Centaur Hospital Ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo during the Second World War.

Veterans and family of the ship’s crew joined students for the service.

“Hundreds of people, and only 64 survived, which is very sad, so every year we come here to remember them.”

“It’s backed up by the school taking on the heritage of the ship. And they take their values system from the ship, from the care, the compassion.”

The Centaur’s wreckage lies off the east coast of Moreton Island.
