JALIENS TO CAPTAIN JETS

Former Dutch international Kew Jaliens will captain the Newcastle Jets for the 2014/15 A-League season.

Jaliens joined the Jets at the start of last season, helping to the side to six clean sheets in 18 games. The defender also scored two goals.

The 35-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the role, playing 16 seasons in the Dutch Eredivisie. He also represented the Netherlands at the 2006 World Cup and Beijing Olympics.

Jets coach Phil Stubbins says Jaliens is the right man for the job.

“The experience Kew has gained playing at the highest level for both Club and country makes him a great candidate to captain the Jets this season,” Stubbins said.

“I’m sure Kew will do a fantastic job, along with the other senior players in the group, of leading the squad this coming season.”

Jaliens, who’ll captain the Jets in their FFA Cup opener against Perth in Newcastle tomorrow night, says he’s honoured to handed the captain’s armband for the season.

“Hopefully I can lead by example with my actions both on and off the field and help guide the team to a successful season.”
