‘BUSINESS AS USUAL’ FOR COUNCIL IN WAKE OF MAYOR RESIGNATION
Newcastle city councillor, Brad Luke, will step up as interim Lord Mayor after this morning’s resignation of Jeff McCloy.
Council’s General Manager Ken Gouldthorp says “it is business as usual at Council and our focus remains on supporting the local community with the full range of Council services.”
Mr McCloy stood down from his position, following evidence given to the ICAC hearing into illegal political donations.
He admitted to the corruption watchdog to giving tens of thousands of dollars to former Hunter MPs Tim Owen and Andrew Cornwell in the lead up to the 2011 state election.
A by-election for a new mayor will be held within three months, on top of two by-elections in the state seats of Newcastle and Charlestown.
