WALLSEND FLOOD ALERT TRIAL

An alert service will be trialled for people living in the Wallsend flood zone.

The area was inundated by the Pasha Bulker storm of 2007, with a torrent of water causing millions of dollars in damage to shops and homes on the suburb’s main street.

Newcastle City Council is trying out a Flash Flood Alert Service, where residents will be notified by text, email or their home phone.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Frank Cordingley says it’s all part of a wider plan to reduce the risks for people during flooding.

“During such events it is common for flood waters to overtop the narrow concrete lined channel and flow through streets and car parks; these flood waters can be deep, fast moving and highly hazardous,” Cordingley said.

“We want to provide as much warning as possible when flood waters approach so that people can take steps to protect themselves, their families and their property.” “The early warning system trial is just one step that Council is taking to address this situation. Wallsend residents will see a rollout of other aspects of the flood mitigation plan for Wallsend in the near future.” –

People interested in taking part need to register for the trial through the council’s website.
