Newcastle police are investigating whether two overnight fires at Cooks Hill are linked.
Two cars were set alight at a housing complex in Railway Street around midnight.
Residents noticed the flames and tried to put them out.
Earlier, bins were set on fire just 100 metres away, on Parry Street.
It’s believed they were found to contain LPG cylinders.
