A petition, calling for the Hunter coal industry to cover and wash all loaded and unloaded coal trains, will be presented to state parliament this week.
The Hunter Community Environment Centre is behind the petition, which has more than 10,000 signatures.
Spokesperson John McKenzie says uncovered coal trains pose a significant health risk to residents and the issue needs to be addressed.
“Uncovered Coal trains expose the community to elevated levels of particle pollution and causes a range of cardiovascular and respiratory health problems,” he said.
