A scare for swimmers at Merewether, with a great white shark spotted just meters offshore this afternoon.
Council lifeguards jumped on jet skis to confirm the sighting, with one getting a little too close for comfort.
Young photographer, Nicholas Tonks, snapped the above photo, of the five metre-long shark hovering near one of the jet skis.
Beaches from Stockton to Merewether were closed for the rest of the day, and are expected to remain shut tomorrow morning.
