WEATHER FORCES CANCELLATION OF RELIGIOUS TRADITION
For the first time in 58 years, a religious tradition in Newcastle has been cancelled due to safety concerns.
Each year, the Greek Orthodox Church throws a special crucifix into the Bogey Hole, which is then retrieved as part of the blessing of the waters ceremony.
Today though that wasn’t the case.
“Because of the weather, a lot of our parishioners are of age, over 55 years old and also a lot of children participate.”
Meanwhile, formal celebrations continued for the holy day of Epiphany, which marks the baptism of Jesus, with a service held at Hamilton.
