A couple has escaped from a fire in their Surfers Paradise unit, lucky to suffer only mild smoke inhalation after they were woken by a smoke detector.
Firefighters were called to the Illawong Road address at around one last night.
“The damage is very extensive, downstairs is basically written off, and upstairs in completely damaged by smoke.”
The fire isn’t being treated as suspicious.
