TRAVELLERS REMINDED TO HAVE MEASLES VACCINATION

Hunter New England Health is urging people travelling overseas to ensure their measles vaccination is up-to-date, following two cases in Sydney.
Public health physician, Professor David Durrheim, says the measles is highly contagious to people who are not fully immunised.
“Measles is highly infectious and is easily spread through coughing and sneezing. If you are not fully immunised or intend to travel overseas make sure you talk to your GP about measles vaccination,” he said.
Symptoms of measles can include fever, tiredness, runny nose, a cough and sore red eyes, which usually lasts for several days before a red, blotchy rash appears.
The onset of symptoms may take between 10 and 18 days.
There have been six cases of the disease in New South Wales this year – three of those were contracted in India.
