$20-MILLION REPAIR BILL FOR FORMER NEWCASTLE POST OFFICE

Almost a year after the state government was ordered to transfer ownership of the former Newcastle Post Office, the Awabakal Land Council is yet to begin renovations.
The group says it’s looking for developers to help cover the cost of fixing up the inner-city icon.

I’m sorry, I know the aboriginals were treated badly when Australia was “invaded” by Europeans but really!
Sure, get backing to assist with repairs but not cover the full cost.
The land council wanted it, they should sort it. There should have been plans already in place before asking for it to be handed over.
This beautiful and historical building has been passed around like a hot potato since Australia Post moved out over 10 years ago. The damage that has been done began very soon after the building was vacated and has gotten progressively worse throughout its corporate ownership and subsequent buy-back by the NSW State government. While some damage may have been incurred in the last year while owned by the Awabakal Land Council, certainly the vast majority of the damage to this now tragic former shadow of her past self had occurred prior to 2014…before the ALC took ownership.
This beautiful old historic part of Newcastle’s past deserves better than to be treated like a political and financial tennis ball.
