‘THE DRIP’ PURCHASED BY STATE GOVERNMENT

One of the Upper Hunter’s natural wonders has been saved from mining, with ‘the Drip’ added to Goulburn River National Park.

The state government has acquired the 23-hectares of land surrounding the gorge, after the former Labor government sold it in 2010 as part of a mining lease.

The purchase fulfills an election promise by the Coalition.

“No mining activity will affect The Drip, and there will be no tunnels under this land which has been reserved today,” said Environment Minister Mark Speakman.

The Member for Upper Hunter, Michael Johnsen, says he’s delighted the site has been saved.

“This is great news for the local community and a great day for the environment with this spectacular piece of land saved for everyone to enjoy,” he said.

Work is continuing on securing more land nearby for the national parks estate over the next two years.
