PHILLIPPA ANDERSON LAUNCHES CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN FOR WORLD TOUR
Merewether surfer Philippa Anderson’s bid to make the World Championship Tour has taken a unique step forward.
The 23-year-old has launched a crowdfunding campaign, hoping to raise enough money to compete in qualifying events across the globe.
She’s regarded as the best female surfer not on the world tour.
But since the loss of her major sponsor, Philippa Anderson has struggled to make it to qualifying events.
She’s hoping crowd-funding is the answer.
Launched this morning, the campaign aims to raise $50,000 US dollars, to go towards flights, accommodation and car hire as well as coaching and personal trainers.
“We’ve got to go to America, Europe and Brazil and Chile so depending on how I’m going it’s quite a big leg ahead so the funds are going to go a long way.”
Following encouragement from campaign organiser Emma Gibbons, a great result in Mexico earlier this month moved Anderson to 12th on the Qualifying Series, giving her the confidence to push further.
“I think mentally now I know I can be there it’s just the funds that are lacking.”
With four time world champion Mark Richards and the rest of the Merewether Surfboard Club already behind her, Anderson is now relying on the kindness of the community to get her to the top.
