HUNTER STUDENTS LEARN SWIM SAFE MESSAGE

It may be winter, but Newcastle’s lifeguards are certainly keeping busy, teaching young beachgoers how to stay safe in the water.

The city’s newest mascot, Nobby, made a special appearance at Waratah Public School this morning, for council’s first water safety talk.

“We’re trying to make sure they go to the beach or the swimming pool, but they go home safely.”

Lifeguards will visit 50 schools over the next eight weeks, educating students on what to do, if they ever get into trouble in the surf.

“Just put your hand up in the air so the lifeguards know that you’re there.”

“They taught us about rips, the kind of animals that we need to avoid, how to stay safe at the beach and took keep in the flags.”
