MARSHALL CONFIDENT OF MERIT PROGRAM IN MOREE

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall is confident a successful drug rehabilitation program will be expanded to Moree.

The MERIT program aims to give Magistrates the option of sending offenders to rehab, rather than putting them behind bars.

Mr Marshall recently met with the New South Wales Attorney General to discuss bringing the program to the town.

“The attorney general’s department is currently conducting a review of the MERIT program, with a view to expanding the program and certainly the attorney general was very positive about including Moree in that expansion.”

Mr Marshall believes it would go a long way in reducing crime rates in the town.

“The MERIT program has reduced the number of drug offenders appearing before local courts and certainly being sentenced before local courts by nearly 20 per cent, so it is something that does work.”
