TOP START FOR ANDERSON IN SPAIN

Merewether surfer Philippa Anderson has proved preparation is the key to success, by blitzing her opening heat at the latest World Qualifying Series event in Spain.

Anderson has competed there in the past, but decided to link up with a local coach this year to improve her chances.

In small, tricky conditions, the 23-year-old scored a 7.3 and a 7.6 to finish almost six points in front of her nearest rival.

Her assignment gets tougher in round four, later tonight Australian time – she’s facing a match-up with world tour competitor, Coco Ho.
