Newcastle wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley has been shortlisted for one of Australia’s most coveted sports awards.
Fearnley is vying for the “The Don”, an annual award presented to the athlete or team that’s inspired the nation in the past 12 months.
He joins a list including NFL recruit Jarryd Hayne, golfer Jason Day, surfer Sally Fitzgibbons and ironman Shannon Eckstein. Surfers Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson were also nominated for their bravery during Fanning’s brush with a Great White during this year’s pro contest at J-Bay. The teams include the Diamonds netball team, the Socceroos for their Asian Cup triumph, and the World Cup winning One Day Cricket team.
