New state legislation regarding dam safety could reduce the amount of money spent by local councils.
Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall believes the Dam Safety Bill amends strict regulations and will introduce a modern, community risk management approach.
He says in the past councils have spent thousands to re-engineer dams, for limited safety gains.
The bill will ensure a full cost-benefit analysis is considered when recommending safety measures.
