Newcastle’s controversial fourth coal terminal has been given the green light by the Planning Assessment Commission.
It found that, while there isn’t an immediate need for the development, Port Waratah Coal Services needed planning certainty and flexibility in the currently volatile coal industry.
Environmental groups have slammed the decision, saying the terminal will become a white elephant in a sinking coal market, if it gets built.
