WORK STARTS ON VISITOR CENTRE AT THORNTON

Thornton will soon be home to a new $3.2-million tourist attraction.

A smoking ceremony celebrated the start of work on ‘The Sheep’s Back Visitor Centre’, including the Mortels Sheepskin Factory, a museum and cafe.

“We’ve got a brand new factory which we’ll operate guided tours so people can see the product being made – a lot of people ask us to come into our current factory but because we’re so squeezed there we can’t do that, we can’t allow them in.”

The company, which was set up in Sydney in the 50s before moving to the Hunter in 1978, employs 25 staff… and that will soon double.

The centre will open in March next year.
