RETIREMENT NOT ON THE HORIZON FOR CHRISTIE DAWES

Fresh from winning her first Fernleigh 15 title, Newcastle wheelchair athlete Christie Dawes has set herself the goal of finishing in the top five at the New York Marathon on the 1st of November.
“Our marathons often come down to sprints so at the end of 42 k’s is horrendous, so the top five could finish within a few hundredths of a second. But I think I can be there.”
Now 35, Dawes says she still has plenty of racing left in her.
“Age can be seen as a real negative thing but I see it as a positive thing that I have such as good base of fitness and strength under me.”
“The R word is not on my horizon just yet. Ha ha ha.”
After New York, she’ll return to Australia for a busy domestic racing schedule, before the build-up to the Rio Paralympic Games begins.
