STATE OF ORIGIN WIN FOR RESCUE TEAM

A local mines rescue team has won what’s regarded as the State of Origin of underground mines rescue competitions.
Held at Lake Macquarie’s Newstan mine, it was the team from Wambo Colliery near Singleton that took out the honours, ahead of Queensland’s Oaky Number One team.
The competition is based on simulated emergency scenarios and is designed to keep the teams at operational readiness.
It’s been 24 years since a Hunter team has won the competition which began back in 1962.
