NEWCASTLE COUNCIL FINED FOR CHLORINE SPILL
Newcastle City Council has been hit with a $15,000 penalty notice for polluting waters with a chlorine solution, as a result of a cracked pump head at Beresfield Pool in September this year.
The Environment Protection Authority says council was notified by concerned community members on two occasions, but council did not attend the premises.
After being made aware of the contamination on September 14, the EPA and Fire and Rescue New South Wales implemented a number of measures to reduce the environmental risk and render the site safe.
“The incident required flushing of the stormwater system to render the site safe and resulted in some localised impacts, including a fish and macro-invertebrate kill in a dam that received contaminated waters at Beresford Golf Course,” said Chief Environmental Regulator Mark Gifford.
