A large navigational marker which normally sits in Stockton Bight to warn shipping of an isolated reef, broke free overnight.
The wayward buoy travelled about 8 kilometres, pushed by a strong northerly wind and swell before coming to rest just below Newcastle’s Strzelecki Lookout.
A tug was sent to retrieve the marker buoy for repairs.
