Organisers of this weekend’s Nobbys to Newcastle ocean swim say they’re going ahead with the event, despite concerns following yesterday’s shark sighting.
A spokesperson says event volunteers will follow an evacuation protocol if a shark is spotted during the swim.
“We’ve got three jet skis, we’ve got five IRBs I’ve got every available person from Newcastle Surf Club on a board or a ski so there’s no way I would put anybody in the water and put them at risk,” says Lee Howes from the Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club.
A two-to-three metre shark was spotted off Nobbys at around midday yesterday.
